THE BLACK-AND-WHITE PIPER
uUfw"*D
Once upon a time
,
on the banks of a great river in the
central
of
China
lay a town called
Zhongyuan
. The citizens
of Zhongyuan
were honest folk who lived contentedly in their
red wood
houses. The years went by, and the town grew very rich.
)>ML7y
Then one day, an extraordinary thing happened to disturb the peace.
q.J6'v lj/
Zhongyuan
had always had
spider
s, and a lot too. But they had never been a danger, for the
bird
s had always solved the
spider
problem in the usual way - by killing
and eating
them. All at once, however, the
spider
s began to multiply.
7=fM}sk
In the end, a
green
sea of
spider
s swarmed over the whole town. First, they attacked the
animals
, then, for lack of anything better, they
bit people and anything they could find
. The one thing they didn't
bite
was metal. The terrified citizens flocked to plead with the town councilors to free them from the plague of
spider
s. But the council had, for a long time, been sitting in the Mayor's room, trying to think of a plan.

"What we need is an army of
bird
s!"

But all the
bird
s were dead.

"We'll put down poisoned food then . . ."
R"OT&:0/
But
the spiders themselves were poisoned, so that wouldn
¡¦
t work at all.
.!~ysy
"It just can't be done without help!" said
Sue Youngman,
the Mayor sadly.
